Huntly Violin Summer School
Monday 5 July – Saturday 10 July 2010
Linden Centre, Huntly
(map)
After the roaring success of its first year, Huntly Violin Summer School is here
again with classes for children and adults running from 5–10 July 2010.
This year the instruments taught are violin, trombone and clarsach, with an evening
group for traditional song.
The Summer School was set up in 2009 by Emily White and her colleagues Pam and Morag
Johnston to introduce classical and traditional violin playing to those who wanted
the chance to learn the instrument. Emily trained as a classical musician at the
Royal Academy of Music, London — Pam and Morag are Shetland Fiddlers. This
proved a winning combination of skills, and last year's capacity classes concluded
with a concert of children and adult beginners performing the Pachelbel's Canon,
Ye Jacobites and improvising. More advanced children were also attracted
to the school and so part of a Vivaldi violin concerto was also performed from memory
at the concert.
This year also includes clarsach for beginners, with Kirsty Whatley. Kirsty is recently
returned from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, where she studied
harp, and the beautiful sound of her playing will inspire all budding clarsach and
harp enthusiasts.
For those who have always wanted to learn the trombone, sign up soon for the limited
places on the trombone course!
We believe that music should be a world open to all, and that performing music is
not exclusive to those with time and resources to have private lessons. The Huntly
Summer School is a week to have a great time playing an instrument, whether a four-year-old
listening to the story told by a trombone, or an adult in a group having a go at
performing on a violin or harp. It is amazing what can be achieved with a sense
of adventure and fun. Thanks to Music Centeral, and their efforts in fundraising
for the School, we are able to offer this week at the incredible price of £30
for the week for children, and £20 for the adult evening classes. The Summer
School is very grateful to the generous sponsorship last year from Scottish Arts
Council, Glens of Foudland Trust for the Arts, Huntly Educational Trust, Enterprise
Music Scotland and Strathbogie Fiddlers.
